The Bohemians produced West Side Story a brand-new production that ran for one week at the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh from the 21st to the 25th of March, 2006.
West Side Story is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicals ever written. First performed in 1957, and based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the warring Montagues and Capulets of Verona become the feuding Jets and Sharks set against a Manhattan tenement skyline. The musical original score contained a handwritten note from composer, Leonard Bernstein, “an out an out plea of racial tolerance.” The themes of West Side Story are as relevant today as they ever have been.
In view of the moral message contained within the topical themes, the Company was anxious to ensure all schoolchildren were given every opportunity to see the production. To this end, up to 250 complimentary tickets werel allocated to Primary 6 & 7 schoolchildren from schools in some of the more disadvantaged areas of the City. In addition, other schoolchildren were able to see the production for as little as £5. |
