The Bohemians are one of Edinburgh's major amateur musical companies. Every year the Company provides over 50 people from all walks of life with the opportunity to work with dynamic and experienced directors, musical directors and technicians presenting large-scale productions as part of Festival City Theatres Amateur Season in The King’s Theatre, one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious venues. HISTORYFormed in 1909, The Bohemians Lyric Opera Company is one of Scotland’s oldest and most respected ‘amdram’ Companies, and is committed to bringing high quality productions of musicals and musical plays to Edinburgh and East of Scotland audiences. 2009 was our Centenary Year, celebrated firstly with a popular Race Evening on 7 th February at the St. Peter’s Church in Edinburgh. Following that, a Centenary Ball was held at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel in Edinburgh where, after a Champagne Reception and Dinner, those attending danced the night away until exhausted. The show on the Centenary year was ‘ Oklahoma’, performed at our regular venue of the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh. This proved a highly successful production; after the Thursday evening performance, a Champagne Reception was held at an appropriate venue nearby, when current and past members met to generally reminisce and enjoy each others company. During the Edinburgh ‘Fringe’, the Company also performed for two evenings at St.Andrew’s and St. George’s Church in George Street, singing to a packed audience on both nights a variety of songs from various musicals heard over past decades. The Company is fully affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA). Charitable Status and Youth Policy“The Bohemians” Lyric Opera Company is recognised as a Charity by OSCR and from time to time makes charitable donations to local and national charities. The Company has a close working relationship with Waverley Care, Scotland’s only H.I.V. and A.I.D.S. charity and also administers an Outreach Programme for disadvantaged schoolchildren. Over the years large numbers of schoolchildren from some of Edinburgh’s most socially deprived areas have taken part in the productions, been given free or reduced seat prices and given educational visits backstage.
